Third Grade - Knights of the Round Table Festival
In early March the Third Grade begins a thematic unit on the classic tales of the Medieval period of history. They learn about various aspects of the Middle Ages such as the Feudal System, the Crusades, life in a castle and castle designs. Accompanying their studies they read the novel Knights of the Round Table, which introduces them to the tales of King Arthur, Merlin, Sir Gawain, Sir Lancelot and many other famous characters of that period. At the end of the unit the students hold a giant feast and tournament. They eat simplistic medieval foods without the use of modern silverware and drink from goblets just as the citizens of the Middle Ages would have done. Afterwards, they engage in a tournament of jousting, catapulting and slaying a balloon filled dragon.
