Pre-Kindergarten Nursery Rhymes Festival
Students dress up as their favorite character from a nursery ryme.
Kindergarten - Fairy Tale Festival
The Fairy Tale Festival is a celebration of six classic fairy tales that are read during a three-week thematic unit. The students culminate the unit by hosting the Fairy Tale Festival, which allows the students to dress up as their favorite fairy tale character and explore a variety of games and activities that are centered around the books that they read.
First Grade - County Fair
Each year, the first grade spends three weeks reading Charlotte's Web and exploring life on a farm. The unit falls in time for the students to attend the East Texas State Fair and look at various farm animals and all the sights and sounds of being at a fair. To culminate the study, the first graders enjoy their own County Fair in our gym. The afternoon is filled with crafts and games, as well as authentic fair food. Students also get to show off their own fair projects in either horticulture, arts and crafts, or farm animals.
Second Grade - Egyptian Festival
Second Graders travel back in time to explore Egypt in the time of the pharaohs and pyramids. They learn about the geography, daily life, and inventions from Ancient Egypt (some of which still exist today). At the end of the unit, they have a festival that has fun stations, food samples and Egyptian costumes. The children then share what they've learned in a short musical program with their parents.
Third Grade - Knights of the Round Table Festival
In early March, the Third Grade begins a thematic unit on the classic tales of the Medieval period of history. They learn about various aspects of the Middle Ages such as the Feudal System, the Crusades, life in a castle and castle designs. Accompanying their studies they read the novel Knights of the Round Table, which introduces them to the tales of King Arthur, Merlin, Sir Gawain, Sir Lancelot, and many other famous characters of that period. At the end of the unit the students hold a giant feast and tournament. They eat simplistic medieval foods without the use of modern silverware and drink from goblets just as the citizens of the Middle Ages would have done. Afterwards, they engage in a tournament of jousting, catapulting, and slaying a balloon filled dragon.
Fourth Grade - Mythology Festival
Shortly after Christmas Break the Fourth-Grade dives into an in-depth study of Greek Mythology. They use the book D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths to read about the birth of Greek Mythology starting with the Titans all the way through the legendary gods and goddesses. From Zues and his mighty thunderbolts to Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, the students immerse themselves in the ancient tales of Greek Mythology. Their four-week study leads them to final preparations to take The National Mythology exam. This thirty-question exam is published by the Excellence Through Classics Program and offers gold, silver and bronze medals based on the students' scores. The culmination of the unit ends with a Greek Mythology festival, which includes traditional Greek foods and carnival type games.
Fifth Grade - Shakespeare Festival
Fifth graders experience Shakespeare’s life through an in-depth study of his epic plays and sonnets. They conduct an author’s study looking at Shakespeare’s life works along with his history of his writing and performances. They read passages from famous Shakespeare plays such as Macbeth, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, The Tempest, Romeo, and Juliet. The Shakespeare unit leads up to a one act play performed by the students in full period costumes with traditional rhyming sonnets.
